Using technology to deliver healthcare and education

The benefits of information technology has a great impact on nursing workflow. Some of the benefits that information technology provides are:
1. Improvement of quality patient care

2. Reduction of medical errors

3. Lower healthcare costs

4. Contribution to the advancement of nursing research

5. Reduction of time-consuming and redundant paperwork

6. Increase efficiency

Although the transition from paper to digital records is slower than expected, it is clear that the benefits of information technology over paper documentation relates to improved workflow and better quality patient care.

Although the benefits of information technology sometimes outweigh traditional pen/paper charting--in some electronic charting it is time consuming with posting and click of drop down menus. I see some nurses, or other health care professionals, becoming frustrated trying to navigate the many menus looking for pertinent information, and end up using the paper chart. While I feel in the end when the kinks are worked out, the benefits will ultimately have a greater impact, thus giving us more time to provide great patient care.--Great blog--A.A.

I was really apprehensive at first about going from paper documentation to computer documentation. I am beginning to feel more comfortable with the transition at my job. The only negative aspect of computer documentation I am finding is when the computer system is "down" and sometimes there is a two hour block where I cannot log on.

p.s. - I also saw on your page that you worked at WMC , I am in TICU !!!

I agree with your blog posts everyone. Informatics is great for nursing in the long run for timely documentation and cost effectiveness. However, the transition can be difficult. I think that for future nursing students in this up and coming generation, it will be easier as the newer generations are more computer literate. Effective training methods and continued support are the best ways to combat nurses frustration on the computer charts. While it is costing money for institutions now to have informatic support staff now, it will benefit them in the long run. Nice Blog - I picked the same topic Andrea

Great job on your blog. The topic is so important. Do you think nurse educators can choose NOT to embrace technology in this day and age?

I agree with you. Now and days it is hard to even think about how we managed all those years without the use of computers. Today nursing informatics has greatly improved the nurse efficiency in order to deliver a better quality of health care to our clients. Nice job. Great blog!!!! DSC

Technology is a must. It is so important for nurses to stay abreast of up & coming technology. It truly is the standard. I agree that the transition is sometimes difficult for some but absolutely necessary. It is great for documentation accuracy providing great timing (provided you are documenting live or back timing).
Danielle, I can certainly empathize with you regarding the computers being down especially since it always seems to happen at the worst possible time.

Your blog is eye pleasing. Can not wait to see it progress.

Agree with the points you make regarding benefits of technology. Anything that reduces costs to the system and patients and enhances advancement of nursing research and information has to be a good thing. Thanks.

I agree with your blog. Information Technology will have a huge impact on nursing. The transition has been slow but that may be a good thing. Many nurses and health care professionals would become too overwhelmed if change occurred too fast. Myself included!

I love the fact the nursing is finally catching up with the latest technology! I love using computers at the patients bedside for administering medication and having the resources to look up the medication you are giving so you are able to explain what it is, what is' for etc.

I think the apprehensiveness of some nurses with this technology is the fear of the unknown. Once, they become used to using computers and the systems that their organization uses, they will realize what a wealth of knowledge is at their fingertips, and it will cut down in time consuming charting etc.

The downfall is of course when the system goes down and you do have to resort to the old paper/pen method....

I completely agree with you. In the beginning during the transition from paper to computer charting I was a little scared. Once I got the hang of it and started using the help desk I became more confident. Today I find myself writting all of my notes in the computer. I only use the chart to read the doctor's notes. I think that computer charting has made our job a little easier and less time consuming.
